1. Pick on a pick.
Fingernails are handy, yes. But if you’re a beginner, you would surely find yourself breaking a nail each time you play. Channel the use – as well as the abuse – onto a pick. Picks don’t hurt each time they break. Fingerpicks or flatpicks — your choice!

2. Knock on wood; don’t knock it around.
Believe it or not, tops crack. Acoustic guitars are far more sensitive to humidity and temperature than you would ever have thought possible. Forget putting them in the trunk or under direct sunlight. Forget putting them anywhere there is heated dry air, too. If you want to learn acoustic guitar, you’ll have to take good care of your instrument first.

3. One size does not fit all.
This is true of shoes and of guitars. So, get the guitar that’s just the right size for you. If your guitar is too large, your fingers wouldn’t be able to move across the fingerboard with strength, much less finesse.
